Patrick Stanley's Steam Capstone Project
Prototype 1
These images show my first design of some of my elements. It definitely shows how early on this was as they are not the highest quality.
Contributors
There were quite a few contributors to my project. First of all Jon Pearson was my professional reviewer. He provided a lot of insight to my project and gave me insight on specifications for my mounting system. There were many others that helped me along the way but I think the most helpful was Mr. Hunter. He was always giving me suggestions and more thought that was extremely useful for me. He always had me thinking more on how to advance my ideas.
Project thoughts and considerations
My last big challenge was trying to figure out how to keep air in the tire once you put the t-nuts in. I was unfortunately not able to figure out how to entirely solve this issue but I do have some ideas on how to solve it in the future.
The goal of my project was to create a system of braking on ice that caused the car to gain traction and not slide. I want to make the roads safer and cause less accidents.
My project hasn't actually changed all that much but the system of attachment was my main change. This was constantly changing and was one of the biggest challenges to figure out.

This is my final product from the expo. There were a few things I couldn't accomplish and I hope to continue those in the future. Overall though I'm pleased with how the expo went and I feel accomplished with what I presented. This portrayed the main parts of my project including the mounting system and the kevlar chains.
Another challenge that I ran into was the kevlar was not as durable as I thought. It could be fairly easily cut with a knife and I had to work through that. My solution was to weave the cord together to create a more solid chain to gain traction.
Rewarding And Future
The most rewarding parts of this project was being able to finish the project in a timely matter. This was able to help me work on my project management. The next rewarding part was making it to the expo and having a project to actually present to the reviewers. The last part was was The reviews I got at the expo. They provided me with good feedback and told me that I had a great project and the concept was great and had good potential. This made me feel good about the work I did.
When looking to the future, I hope to advance this project or help someone else with the same interests in this topic. I want to be able to help those that get in these situations be able to get out of them.
